In the vein of creepy and disturbing works that I am posting up through Halloween, this piece came out of childhood and the vivid memories of kids being bullied, I being one of them. I combined some of those stories and traits into Bingo, a little monster boy who has not yet grown into his “good looks” and is teased by the other monster kids. Bingo is empathic, painfully shy, and even though the other monster kids wanted to be ugly and frightening, he simply wants to be beautiful. This piece depicts when he got into his monster Mom’s makeup and “made himself up”. He actually did a pretty good job of his lipstick and eyeshadow, but he was only able to find three eyelashes, but that was enough to finally see himself as beautiful for the first time in his life. Beauty is subjective, but deeply personal and one's feeling of where they stand on the attractiveness scale can diminish a persons quality of life and at times be dangerous to a person’s health and mental welfare.
I was raised to believe that everyone is equal, everyone is beautiful and unique in their own way, and each of us should be celebrated for the characteristics they have, and their differences make the world a better place. Bingo would likely have been one of my misfit pals in school. :)
